Thoughts From the Chair: June 13,2021

There is an unsettling and serious threat to our democracy and the nation we cherish. Two Hundred and Forty-Five years ago, by revolution, we shed the British crown. In 1787, we brought forth the Constitution for this new nation. It is a fragile thing, this democratic republic of ours. Benjamin Franklin declared that we have a republic – if we can keep it. In 1789, after Washington was elected the first president, Franklin said: “The first man put at the helm will be a good one. Nobody knows what sort may come afterwards.” Franklin warned: “The executive will be always increasing here, as elsewhere, till it ends in a monarchy.”

George Washington said that the powers under the Constitution will always be with the people. He explained that only for certain limited times do we entrust power to our elected representatives. Representatives, he advised, can and will be recalled whenever these servants of the people act contrary to the wishes and interest of the people.

Trump’s march to monarchy was rudely interrupted by us – the people. He lost the popular vote and the electoral college vote. Donald John Trump was recalled by the people. Our Constitutional government worked exactly as Washington explained.

The Trump Monarchy supporters refuse to accept Trump’s expulsion from power. Supporters embrace Q-Anon, ‘ItalyGate’, Jewish space lasers, and every other nonsensical conspiracy theory they can unearth. Why? Because they refuse to accept that their march toward monarchy and a government of exclusion was rejected by the American people.

Only a maniacal administration would pressure our nation’s top cop to investigate absurd claims that Italy had deployed technology that somehow switched votes from Trump to Joe Biden. ‘ItalyGate’ is absurd on its face. Have Trump and his supporters succeeded in pushing the bounds of acceptable conduct so far that we are no longer shocked by anything? The fact that Trump’s continued antics with respect to the election he clearly lost makes it appear so. Some say this is a five-alarm fire for our democracy. It is.

The morally bankrupt Republicans peddle exclusion, white supremacy, and economic Darwinism. The Republican vote suppressors are attacking. They spread more lies to try to cover up those that they spewed before.

Are we willing to have the courage of our beliefs? School teacher Nathan Hale was executed by the British on September 22, 1776. His last words were “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

Where do we Democrats stand. Are we prepared to wage war for the triumph of truth, reason, and equal representation? Who else will protect voter rights? Who stands for Truth, Justice, and the American way? It falls to us. We shall fight. We are Democrats. We are the 2021 American Patriots.
